Winners of Online Watermelon Carving Contest

Congratulations to all of the winners!

The winners of the online watermelon carving contest have been decided. I was pleased to see that 14 of the 30 different winning entries were submitted by past and present customer/students of ours. In 9 out of 12 categories/divisions, my student/customers won 1st place. Way to go!

Here is the winning entry in the “Most Elegant Category” by an experienced carver. Yiota Thoma made this beautiful and colorful display for a wedding.

Panayiota Thoma won first place in the Most Elegant Category for experienced carvers. Yiota is a long time customer/student who has since become a professional carver in Canada.

Simon Muskat, a customer/student from Malta took first place for “Best Animal Carving” by experienced carvers.

Customer/student Rose Flores, who is now a professional carver, took first place in the “Star Spangled” category for experienced carvers. She did a beautiful job on this one didn’t she.

Customer/student Lillian Ho won first prize for “Best Basket Carving” in the Beginner division. It’s very pretty.

There were 5 categories. Most Elegant, Funniest Carving, Star Spangled, Best Basket, and Best Animal Carving. Each category had a beginner and an experienced division. In addition, out of all of the entries, there was a “Judges Choice” and a “Peoples Choice” award in the beginner and experienced division. 30 prizes were awarded.

By the way, I did not run this contest and was not one of the judges. So, I am not quite sure how each winner was decided. I’m posting this simply for your information and entertainment.

Sue Dietrick’s fruit monkey talking on a cell phone won first place for funny carvings by an experienced carver. Makes you smile doesn’t it? Sue is also a customer/student.

Compete in Next Year’s Contest

I encourage you to enter in next summer’s watermelon carving contest.

If you would like to improve your carving before entering the contest next year, then check out our video lessons and tools here.

To be ready for next year’s contest, take photos of your carvings throughout the year. Just make sure that you take a photo of you with each of your carvings. It’s a requirement of the contest to prove that you made your carving and did not just find a photo online. Then you will be prepared to enter next year’s online watermelon carving contest.
