Your Melon Basket will amaze and impress your friends!
This is NOT your mother’s simple, old fashioned watermelon basket. These are simple to make, and impressive when complete! You’ll see.
You can use your melon baskets as a fruit salad bowl or as a bowl to hold sweet yogurt dip. You can carve an entire melon with the weave pattern and use the completed melon as a vase for real flowers, or for carved fruit and vegetable flowers. If you know how to carve the roses and melon flowers taught in my other lessons, Carving Watermelons, Roses, Buds and Leaves and Melon Carving, Smooth and Jagged Petals, you can carve the basket and flowers into one beautiful melon that can be used as a centerpiece for a fruit tray. However you choose to use your melon baskets, you’ll have fun watching jaws drop when people see your lovely melon baskets.
These Melon Basket Weave lessons are designed to function much like a live class. You will be able to carve along with the video. The questions that you are likely to have are answered as we progress through the lessons. You’ll see common mistakes and you’ll see how to avoid or fix them. You always have a front row seat with a clear view and sound. And you can review your video lessons any time that you want to refresh your memory.
This basket weave pattern is great year round. In the spring, you can carve pretty melon Easter baskets with fruit instead of candy filled baskets. And, you’ll find this pattern useful for making watermelon baskets of all sizes for all of your summer picnics. Your friends will be green with envy when your show up to potlucks with your beautiful carved melon baskets. You can even use this basket weave pattern with pumpkins, come Autumn.
These video instructions are intended for those who have completed at least my video lessons, Carving Watermelons, Roses, Buds and Leaves. However, it’s easy enough for beginners.

I highly recommend our Thai Pro Knife with flexible blade for carving this pattern. You may be able to use a sharp pointed paring knife. However, the long thin sharp blade of the Thai Pro knife makes carving this pattern easier. An ordinary divider (compass) is optional. It’s helpful for carving even circles. You may also get one many office supply stores. If you don’t already have a Thai Pro Knife, you can add the it to your cart using the buttons below in the section titled, “Related Products”.
