In preparing for my TV appearance on Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family show, I experimented with an easy to make, easy to teach, watermelon bowl. Here’s the evolution of my leaf pattern watermelon bowl as I played around with the idea.
This is now part of some new lessons we have available. Click here to learn more.

My first idea was a simple leaf pattern
I thought it looked too boring. So I tried adding a pedestal base to the bowl.

I carved some leaves into the pedestal base.
I thought it still looked too boring. There is not enough contrasting light areas to make the leaves stand out visually.

I tried adding some stripes to the base of the bowl. I liked the way that it made the leaves more visible. But overall, in my opinion, it was still too plain.

I added the same type of stripes to the bowl. I like how this looked better.
Then I put the base back under the bowl to get the following completed look.
Completed Leaf Pattern Watermelon Bowl

I got this look after putting the base and the bowl back together and adding the fruit salad.
This is the result that I liked best.
Maybe my experimentation with my leaf pattern watermelon bowl will give you some ideas.
Is this what I’ll be demonstrating or carving for my upcoming appearance on Home and Family? Nope. I’ll be doing something else. You’ll have to watch and see.

Nita,
I love it!! That is very pretty. You are so creative.
Thank you.
Always beautiful and creative!
Hello Nita, just wanted to know will you have a DVD on the leaf bowl ?
I’ll let you know. We’ve not yet filmed that one.
I want to learn carving. There are so many DVD’s. Is there one or two that have most things on it??
Hi Carroll,
Thank you for you interest. Check your email because I just sent a detailed email about where to begin with our lessons. The short answer is that because our DVDs are designed to be like live lesson, we do not have one or two DVDs with most things on it. DVDs don’t hold enough content to do that. We’ll talk more via email. Happy Carving!
