You may remember my student /customer Summer Dawn Coumbes from my blog article on pretty fruit arrangements on Mar 9th. A few days after I posted that article, I announced that a fruit and vegetable carving competition was coming up in Plain City, Ohio on May 21st. I suggested that it would be a fun event to attend whether it be as a spectator or a competitor.
Well, Summer hopped in her car and made the 3 hour drive to participate in her first ever fruit and vegetable carving competition.
Summer earned a third place prize in the amateur division!
Here is what Summer wrote to me in an email following the competition:
I meant to send these to you a lot sooner, but I’ve just been so busy! I had a blast at the competition. It was a great first experience, and I certainly gained a lot of knowledge and self confidence by attending. I ended up tying for 3rd place and got some carving knives, a cutting board, and a $25.00 gift card to Home Depot. (it was meant to be a 50.00 gift card but they split it between me and the other girl who got 3rd place as well).
As you can see I went with a Hawaiian theme for my display, and did tropical flowers, a palm tree and tucan. The girl I tied with did a bird theme and it appears it was set up to look like a big bird bath/fountain with lots of cute birds.
It was nice seeing all the carvings in person since I’ve only ever actually seen my own in person until now. Unfortunately I didn’t get any pictures of the chalk art and ice carvings since I was busy with the competition. But I still had a blast!
Maybe you’d like to try your hand at a competition. Below are some photos of the winners that Summer sent to me from the Heritage Days Fruit and Vegetable Carving Competition.

Winners of the Heritage Days Fruit and Vegetable Carving Competition
in Plain City, Ohio.
The amateur division winners were selected by judges. The professional division winners were determined by “people’s choice”. Visitors to the event voted for their favorite carvings. Those votes determined the winners of the pro division.
