Who knew a banana peel and a safety pin is all it takes to create amazing works of Banana Art? We were amazed when we discovered these incredible carved portraits by graphic artist and illustrator, Honey.
She’s created amazing recreations of iconic photos, including this James Dean illustration on the right.
But there’s more to banana art than what meets the eye. Instead of actually drawing on the bananas, Honey uses a safety pin to poke tiny holes through the peel. As the air makes its way to the fruit, the peel turns brown and the design emerges. The whole process takes up to two hours to create but the final product is short-lived. Honey snaps a photo and then indulges in the sweet treat that is her banana art.
Famous Photos with Banana Art
From Bob Marley to the Blues Brothers, Honey has created an assortment of spectacular banana art on her blog, Sweet Station. All of the banana art photos are credited to her blog.
Other Works of Banana Art
Not all of Honey’s banana art features famous faces though. She finds inspiration in other places too.
Banana Art Videos
Here are a couple of videos showing the creation of Banana Art in progress. Created by Phil Hansen.
Banana art does not have to be as complex as the images that I’ve shown you so far as you can see in this next video. It would be even easier to start with clip art that you can find all over the web.
Have fun experimenting with making your own banana art.
