Amateur Pumpkin Carving Division

The Amateur pumpkin carving division at the Jack Hanna Pumpkin Carving Competition at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, gave an opportunity for anyone to try out their first competition. There were cash prizes awarded to the top 3 winners. Surprisingly, only 4 competitors signed up. So, everyone had an excellent chance of winning a cash prize.

Besides the fun of competing, all of the amateurs were invited to join the carvers of all the divisions, the judges and the organizers for a lavish dinner. It was a great way for them to get to know the Master carvers and the Pros. During the two days, when they weren’t competing, the amateurs were free to hang out and carve with the judges, pros, and other amateurs in the demo tent. The Zoo visitors enjoyed seeing their carving in action. In an upcoming post, I’ll show you some of the pumpkins that were carved just for fun (and were not part of the competition) during the 2 day event.

Winners of the Amateur Pumpkin Carving Division

Ron Roberts of Salem Ohio learned about the competition from reading about it in my blog. He decided to join in the fun. He ended up winning the first place prize of $125 for his entry named “No Evil”.

Ron Robert’s third place winning pumpkin carving had 3 monkeys carved on 3 sides of the pumpkin. Here is the “See No Evil” side.

The second place prize of $100 went to Grace Lipster of Grandview Ohio.

My apologies to Grace. I don’t have a photo of her entry to share here. Grace carved a cute face of a girl with a couple of 3 dimensional bugs on the girls face. It was whimsical and charming.

Twelve year old Austin Michaels of Cincinnati, Ohio won the 3rd place prize of $75. Austin has grown up around pumpkin carving because his dad is Jon Michaels who competed in the Masters Division. Austin kept right up with the adults.

Fourth Place went to Shawn A. Eckhart of Elyria, OH with his carvings of masks.

In addition to the Amateur Pumpkin Carving Competition there was a Masters 3D carving event, a Masters Pumpkin Build event, a Pro division and a People’s Choice Competition. All together there was $7900 awarded in cash prizes.

If the Jack Hanna Pumpkin Carving Competition takes place next year, maybe you’ll want to join in the fun.
