Watermelon Carving Competition

watermelon carving competition contestantsI participated in a fun watermelon carving competition with my fruit carving class mates at the Thai Temple. I continue to learn and practice almost every week with these ladies. Once a year, we do a friendly competition.

You will enjoy seeing all of the idea inspiring photos from the watermelon carving competition in this article and in the photo gallery below.

Friendly Watermelon Carving Competition Inspires Learning

It’s always fun to see what kinds of carvings everyone will create at watermelon carving competitions.

Watermelon Carving Competition Winner Tina LeBien

Watermelon Carving Competition 1st Place Winner Tina LeBien

This time, the only rule was that we were to bring a carved watermelon. We were free to carve any design that we wanted.

Of course, we all wanted to win first place but our newest carving classmate, Tina Le Bien beat us all and won the first prize award. Tina has only been carving since February or March of this year. That’s only about 5 or 6 months! And look at what beautiful carving she does. Even her first carvings were done so well.

Tina’s name seems fitting. In the French language Le Bien, means The Good. In English, Tina Le Bien would translate to Tina The Good. And she is good, n’est pas?

Congratulations Tina.

If you want to learn to carve watermelons, let Tina be an inspiration to you. When shown how, you too can be carving beautiful watermelons like hers.

As far as the rest of the watermelon carving competition, I won the 2nd Prize with my watermelon carved with a swan design.

Nuj Whitman and Anne Piyawan tied for the 3rd Place Award in the watermelon carving competition with their lovely watermelon carvings. You can see photos of them and their carvings in the photos gallery below. (There are just too many photos to squeeze onto this page).

A number of the other contestants in this watermelon carving competition were recognized with “Most Improved” Awards.

A few of my favorite things at our watermelon carving competition

Nuj experimented with a new design with large green leaves on the outside and small flower petals on the inside red portion of her watermelon.

Araceli made a beautiful daikon carved with a pattern of roses and dyed pastel colors. Isn’t it beautiful?

Krong’s watermelon carving had a beautiful bold geometric pattern when viewed from the top.

Tina carved a second watermelon for the watermelon carving competition with an intricate flower design and a green leaf on the outside. Her detail and symmetry were really well done. You can see all of what I am describing in the photos of the watermelon carving competition below.

Our Youngest Carver in the Watermelon Carving Competition

Kimberly Hernandez who is only 10 years old continues to amaze us with her growing talent at fruit carving. If you are a child or have a child who is interested in fruit carving, let Kimberly be an inspiration to you. Kids can do beautiful carvings, too.

Ten year old Kimberly is a talented carver

We are grateful to our dedicated teacher Tym Chaipanya who judged the competition with assistance from accomplished carver, Tip. All of the watermelon carvings were so beautiful, it must have been difficult to decide.

We enjoyed seeing everyone else’s carvings. All of our cameras were flashing. It was fun to learn from each other and get new ideas for future carvings.

Wow, this looks like fun Nita. That is astounding talent to have learned to carve like that in only a few months, is there hope for the rest of us? It must have been very hard to pick a winner out of so many amazing entries. And a 10 year old girl, her carving is also very lovely. Very inspiring post.
