I’ve recently been publishing some photos of watermelon portraits and pizza portraits and today, I’m sharing some photos of watermelon carvings of people by professional fruit carver Edson Oliveira of Brazil.

Since I am not familiar with Brazilian culture and current events, I cannot tell you if these carved watermelon portraits are of celebrities or if they are of ordinary people. Ultimately, I suppose it does not really matter. Besides showing off Edsons carving skills, the point of this article is to share with you some more images of watermelon portraits to give you some ideas of your own. You can see how Edson carved watermelon portraits with people with glasses and men with beards. You’ll see some with couples. Carved watermelon with images of couples can make great buffet table centerpieces for weddings.

Carved watermelon rose topped cake

Carved watermelon rose topped cake taught in Nita’s Watermelon Cakes video instructions.

For diabetics, vegans, people with gluten allergies and for others who simply want a clean healthy alternative to regular cake, cakes made from watermelons are great.  They are pretty, colorful and pleasing to the eye. From a health perspective, watermelon cakes are a  much better choice because they have none of the artery clogging fat, and none of the highly refined white flour and sugar found in regular cakes. Compared to commercially available cakes and cake mixes, watermelon cakes have no artificial colors, flavors, additives or preservatives. Cakes made from watermelons contain only fresh fruit.

Even for people with no dietary restrictions, cakes made from watermelons are an eye-catching unexpected surprise that will delight your guests. continue reading…

Thai Fruit Carvings at Loy Krathong Festival

Thai Fruit Carvings at Loy Krathong Festival

In  my previous blog post, I published some amazing photos and video showing the colorful Thai Festival of Lights, Loy Krathong in Thailand.

The Thai community here in Southern California also celebrates Loy Krathong with festivals, fruit carvings and floating flowers. Unfortunately, the incredible flying candle lit lanterns shown in my previous blog article are not a part of the celebration here. The beautiful lanterns lanterns that float into the sky could easily start huge fire storms here in Southern California.

The Loy Krathong festival here does includes beautiful fruit carvings, and the traditional water floats. At last year’s Loy Krathong the fruit carving members of the local Thai Temple and I carved vegetables and fruits to decorate one of the booths at the festival. Here are some photos of the carvings. continue reading…

When my husband and I left the TV studio at about 10:30 a.m. on July 3rd, we had done nothing to prepare for the party other than having a few fruit and vegetable carvings left over for the show to use for the party. So we got busy continue reading…

Ali Tahir Butt with his carved watermelon cake

A while back, when I first published my carved watermelon cake video, many readers and students/customers were inspired and sent me messages and photos of their carved watermelon cake creations. Here is what one of my students, down under in Australia, wrote to me.

Hi Nita,
Happy Birthday and thanks for the beautiful gift of watermelon cake carving. Its amazing how a little thought can turn an ordinary watermelon into a work of art. I thank God for sending us his favorite Fruit carving Angel into the Body form of Nita. God Bless you for bringing the joy in people’s life. May God give you a long life to keep blessing every one with your talent.
